Position:           Video Relay Services (VRS) Interpreters

Job Location:    Baton Rouge, LA and Madison, WI

 

The VRS team is an outstanding group of superlative interpreters with a strong dedication to customer service and quality interpretation.  The VRS Interpreter will work closely with others to uphold BIS’ philosophy of service, providing and receiving feedback on an ongoing basis.  The VRS interpreter will be able to work independently but will have opportunities to team and interact with other interpreters.  The VRS TEAM is constantly adapting to new technologies and accepting new challenges in the high tech field of video relay service.  If you are interested in adding something new to your interpreting experiences, this position is just for you!

     

Job Responsibilities:

·            Provide sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation/transliteration for deaf and hearing video relay callers working as a video interpreter

·            Uphold Hamilton Relay VRS philosophy of service

·            Ensure outstanding customer service

·            Commit to ongoing professional and skill development

·            Provide peer observations

 

Education & Experience:

·         Ability to effectively communicate in American Sign Language (ASL)

·         B.A. or higher or five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience

·         RID Certification (CI, CT, CI/CT, CSC) or NAD (V)

·         Preferred 5-10 years working experience as a certified sign language interpreter in a variety of settings

·         NAD level IV/V, or RID :CI, CT, CI/CT, CSC or NIC

·         Hold a state interpreter certificate at the Intermediate or Master Certificate skill levels or

·         Have the professional interpreting experience to become a Hamilton Relay VRS interpreter, as determined by VRS Supervisory team

·         Excellent voicing skills and a good understanding of Deaf culture

·         Experience with video interpreting preferred

Position(s):      ASL Translator (Full-Time & part-time positions)

Job Location:   Maryland Relay Center, Frostburg, Maryland

 

Job Summary:

Birnbaum Interpreting Services (BIS) has new and exciting opportunities in the operations function of BIS for ASL Translators.  Currently we are seeking three full-time (40 hrs week) and  part-time (up to 20 hrs for shifts listed below) to support the Maryland Relay Center located in Frostburg, MD. 

 

Summary of Key Job Responsibilities:

Performs ASL Translation duties at the Maryland Relay Center by performing the following essential job functions for the following work hours and shifts:

 

Weekdays & Weekends (Saturday – Sunday & Holidays)

1st Shift:  7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

2nd Shift:  3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

3rd Shift:  11:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (3rd shift receives additional 15% night differential pay)

 

General Duties:

·     Translate effectively between American Sign Language and English for relay calls.

·     Maintain confidentiality regarding all call information

·     Translate relay calls accurately, quickly and without deliberate alteration of the messages

·    Utilize the “team” approach with relay operators to provide consumers with accurate, timely and effective communication

·    Provide support as needed in “special projects” arena as needed. 

 

Education & Experience:

·    Associates degree (A.A.) in Deaf Education Studies from a college or university; or three to five years related sign language interpreter experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·    Must pass the initial on translating between ASL and English, confidentiality, Deaf Culture, ethics and decision making skills.

·    Required to take a typing test

·    Proficiency in the use and understanding of American Sign Language required.

·    Ability to translate between American Sign Language and English is required

·    Experience in administering certification testing is highly desirable.

·    Work related experience in a call center, relay center, telecommunications environment or comparable work environment is a plus.

·    Ability to effectively translate between English and American Sign Language; must possess a comprehensive understanding of the Deaf Culture

·    Excellent interpersonal skills both written and oral

·    Project Management skills helpful
